Delaware legalized sports betting in June 2018
It’s hard to believe, but Delaware has become the first US state to legalize sports betting. While not the biggest state in the Union, Delaware has already seen success in a number of sports betting initiatives. Its population is only 961k, and the lottery has no set timeline for launching online sports betting in the state. However, this could change in the coming months, so be sure to check back for updates.
In June 2018, Delaware became the first state to legalize sports betting. After a Supreme Court decision overturned the law banning sports betting nationwide, Delaware continued to offer three-team parlays on NFL games. Sports betting in Delaware was not available online, but it was available at three physical casinos. The first bets were placed on Philadelphia Phillies vs Chicago Cubs on June 5th, and the Phillies won 6-1. Sports betting in Delaware remains illegal online and on mobile devices.
Missouri has not legalized sports betting
In the state of Missouri, there are 13 commercial casinos, but the state has not legalized sports betting. The Missouri Gaming Association says that legalizing sports wagering was an important step for the state, but the Missouri Senate has not acted on it. The Senate adjourned early for the 2022 session, and Sen. Tony Luetkemeyer predicted that it wouldn’t happen this session. Regardless of the outcome, it was a positive sign for sports betting in Missouri.
In other states, such as Illinois, Tennessee, Iowa, and Kansas, pressure from the public was a factor in bringing about the legalization of sports betting. However, there are no lawmakers in Missouri speaking negatively of online sports betting, despite recent efforts. Despite this, it appears that the state may never have a better time to legalize sports betting. The current legislative session is the most promising time for lawmakers to pass such a law.
New Jersey, Delaware and Rhode Island have legalized it
Sports wagering is already a legal pastime in three states – New Jersey, Delaware, and Rhode Island. The Delaware lottery-run sports betting market is regulated by the state lottery office. Mississippi legalized sports wagering in 2017, with the state legislature passing regulations in June. The Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians were among the first tribes to open sports wagering operations. While Mississippi’s state legislature attempted to legalize mobile sports betting in 2019, the bill failed. In the state of New Jersey, the sports betting industry was legalized in 2018, and New Jersey’s state government oversees the state’s gaming operations through the Division of Gaming Enforcement.
While many states have laggardly regulations, some are catching up. After legalizing sports betting in New Jersey and Delaware, more states will follow suit. Several states are awaiting approval of their laws, with a few already legalizing retail and mobile wagering. New York legalized sports betting in 2013, but suspended it following a Supreme Court decision. The state’s first legal sports wager occurred in 2019, and it’s anticipated that online sports betting will be legal in that state by the early 2020s.
